What Training Do Endodontists Receive? Endodontists have to follow proper training methods and procedures before they can start practicing dental procedures on their patients. Endodontists have to carry out some of the most difficult dental procedures, which explains why they receive heavy training before fully practicing dental procedures. Their main aim is to help prevent dental diseases that could affect interior parts of your tooth, such as blood vessels, pulp, nerves and root. Below we have mentioned what kind of training an endodontist has to receive in order to become a licensed endodontist.
Steps of Educational Training for Endodontists
1. Bachelors Degree
Some children dream of being a firefighter or astronaut when they grow up, while some dream to be dentists, specifically an endodontist. For that dream to come true, you first have to receive a bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university. Your choice of subjects to study from will be under science. These subjects include chemistry, physics, biology, and human anatomy. It is also advisable for you to focus on business-related subjects with respect to financing, communication, and business education as many dentists have the desire to open their own clinic and have direct contact with patients where they can operate their own dental practices.
While studying for their bachelor’s degree, medical students volunteer in organizations related to their field. Students willing to become endodontists can volunteer or intern at different dental clinics or offices. You can also take part in dental research if your university is conducting clinical research. It is a must for medical students to take part in such activities and intern at dental clinics as this encourages them to enhance their knowledge related to endodontics and the entire dental industry. This knowledge grooms them and prepares them to get ready for a future career in dentistry and endodontic procedures.
2. Dental School
After you’ve received a well-distinguished bachelor’s degree in dental surgery, your next step in training is graduating from dental school. In dental school, you take part in programs that are a form of training. These programs begin with the history of dental sciences and biomedical studies that cover a wide range of topics, such as the overall human dental anatomy.
Dental school programs last for 4 years. In the first and second year, students are taught different dental procedures and learn dental sciences in a laboratory setting. If you’re in your first or second year of med school then you will be taught different dental procedures such as imaging, teeth cleansing, and scaling. Sometimes, students are also taught about some endodontic procedures. Students in their third and fourth year are trained and taught on how to diagnose and treat patients. This is carried out by students under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. Each student gets to put four years’ worth of training into practice. Each student has to take a final examination of whatever they have learned in all the four years during med school. High performance in the examination leads to receiving a designation of a DMD(Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry) or a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgeon).
3. Training for License
After dental school, the next step is to train for a license that will allow you to practice dentistry. You will have to give a National Board Dental Examination, which is both written and clinical. This exam is demanded and associated through the American Dental Association. The exam consists of two parts. The first part of the exam is a written examination which tests all your knowledge of dentistry oral health. The second part of the exam is a clinical examination that you can only take if you have successfully managed to pass the first part of the exam.
After you have passed both parts of the exams, you will need to attain a license for the specific state you want to practice in; you might have to maintain your license by attending educational seminars and classes.
4. Endodontic Residency
Anyone who wants to be an endodontist has to complete the endodontic residency program that helps train them in becoming successful future endodontists. The residency program includes various modern endodontic treatments such as pediatric endodontic treatment, treatment and diagnosis of gum disease, emergency treatment of traumatic teeth injuries, and the utilization of microscopes. The board of certified endodontists administers this program.
The program lasts for two years, and its completion is based only after the resident has successfully managed to prepare an independent research project. Each resident presents their independent research project during the annual session of the American Association of Endodontists. These projects go forward for publication in a medical journal. After training is complete, the resident will have to complete a board certification, and its accomplishment will result in the candidate becoming a board-certified endodontist.
