Common Services that an Endodontist Provides

What are the most common services that an endodontist provides? Dentists are general practitioners that help you with most issues you have with your teeth. However, as general practitioners, they’re limited in helping patients. If you have severe problems in the pulp or nerve, many will often recommend you to a specialist. Endodontists are specialists who study for an extra two or more years on top of their dental degree.

Common Services an Endodontist Provides

Endodontic services focus more on treating the tooth’s interior, such as the pulp and nerve around each root. Since endodontists are specialists, they can perform various procedures that most dentists can’t. If you have similar issues or your dentist is recommending a specialist, contact an endodontist immediately.

Root Canal Treatment

A root canal is one of the most common procedures that an endodontist performs. They will often perform this procedure to save the tooth and avoid having to remove it completely.

When the core layer of the tooth, also known as the pulp, becomes infected, you need to contact an endodontist immediately. Not treating the root canal in time could lead to inflammation. It can also result in severe infection, which can build up to pain, cysts, and tooth loss.

The symptoms of this condition can vary from patient to patient. However, the most common ones can include tooth sensitivity, consistent pain, swelling of the gums, or sensitivity within the bone. The discoloration of a tooth is another symptom that the individual needs a root canal.

Endodontic Retreatment

Although rare, endodontic retreatment becomes essential when the root canal doesn’t hold or the procedure isn’t performed properly.

This problem occurs for a few reasons, with the most common one being the time between the first procedure and placing the crown. If there is a longer interval between these two steps, the risk of infection significantly increases. It is also possible that an injury caused cracked the tooth, exposing the tooth and leading to an infection.

The endodontist will remove the filling and the crown and will clean out the tooth again while looking for anything unusual. Afterward, they will refill the tooth and replace the crown.

Trauma or Injury

If you are injured in some way, then your first trip would be to the hospital’s emergency room. Following your visit to the hospital, you will likely need to go to an endodontist. Most likely, the hospital will refer you to an endodontist since they can better diagnose the damage.

Their specialty revolves around root canals and trauma injuries to the teeth. So if your teeth crack, chip, or break off, they will recommend the correct treatment. Often times endodontists can save the tooth by performing root canal treatment.

Apicoectomy

In rare cases, people experience pain even after a root canal procedure. This could mean there’s an infection underneath the roots of the tooth that’s extending to your jaw. A root canal can help with an infected tooth, but can’t heal the surrounding tissues. The endodontist will perform a surgery better known as an apicoectomy.

During the operation,  an endodontist will make a small incision to reveal the infection. Then, they will extract the infected tissue, will clean the inside, and fill in the tooth. Sutures are ideally used to keep the gum tissues intact. After, you will need to return for another appointment to take out the sutures and make sure your gums are healing properly.
