Aftercare Advice for Root Canal Patients

Sometimes a root canal can be done in more than one visit to your dentist, but the aftercare advice given to all patients is the same every time you leave the dentist’s office. You will be given explicit instructions on what you should and shouldn’t do to avoid any further problems, and there are some things which you absolutely must do as part of your aftercare plan. Here is some of what your aftercare plan will entail.

You MUST Take All Prescription Medications as Directed

Most often, the need for a root canal was evidenced by the level of pain and swelling you presented with when arriving at the dentist’s office. This usually indicates that an infection is raging, and that infection may linger on after the root canal procedure is complete. While the dentist will clean and disinfect the area, some infection may be lingering in your body. Take all prescriptions as directed to avoid further problems.

Follow Instructions for Keeping the Area Clean

Just because the dentist cleansed the area inside the tooth where the pulp was removed doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t continue to keep the area cleansed when at home. Whether you have a lingering infection or not, it is possible to develop an infection if you don’t follow the steps given to you by your dentist for cleansing your mouth.

Be Aware of Pain Levels

Under normal circumstances, there will still be some amount of pain and tenderness immediately following the root canal procedure. However, that pain should begin to abate within the first day or two. If the pain doesn’t subside or grows worse, call immediately to be seen. Your prescription may not be effectively treating the infection.

Follow the ‘Diet’ of Foods You Are Allowed to Eat

You will be given a list of foods you can eat after a root canal, but there is usually a waiting period before you can chew anything at all. Remember, you were given a local anesthetic and are in danger of biting your tongue if trying to eat before the numbing agent wears off. Also, you need to give that tooth the required time necessary for the cement to dry so as to avoid loosening the filling.

Because you will be told to avoid putting too much pressure on that area in the days following a root canal, you may want to pick up a night guard if you are known to grind your teeth in your sleep. The main point to remember is that you should notice an immediate change in the pain level following a root canal and if that pain doesn’t go away or intensifies, contact our office without delay.
